Antelope House leaps into action

2nd July 2010

The brand new Adult Mental Health Unit for the city of Southampton is up and running. Antelope House replaces the old Department of Psychiatry at the Royal South Hants Hospital.

It has been purpose built to be a safe, peaceful and well equipped home for staff and service users. Every bedroom is en-suite, and there are courtyard gardens off every ward. There is also a gym, and a sanctuary and faith room.

There are sixty beds in the new building. Ten of them are for Psychatric Intensive Care (or PICU). There are also male and female wards including two High Dependency Units (HDU).

Antelope House is named after the first cricket ground in the city - The Antelope. It has taken the development team two years from start to finish. That team included a former service user who helped decide what and how parts of the project should be done. An official opening day is planned for the Autumn and will involve the surrounding communities.

Each bedroom has its own toilet and shower and has been carefully designed and tested down to the very last detail. The whole building is very bright and light and brings together staff in one place.
