Patient care to be brought closer to home for Southampton’s new community ENT and hearing aid service
5th March 2010
A major collaboration in the last year between NHS Southampton City and GPs has highlighted that moving ear, nose and throat (ENT) and audiology services into the local community would provide the best level of care for patients.
As part of this continuing work to improve care pathways for patients, NHS Southampton City can announce that InHealth Group has been named as the recommended bidder to deliver a new community ENT and audiology service, to begin on Monday 5 April 2010.
The community based ENT service will include doctor and nurse-led appointments which offer medical treatment, minor procedures and further follow-up for patients aged 16 years and older. InHealth will also be providing an audiology hearing aid service for adults aged 16 years and over in Southampton.
The service will be delivered from three locations from across the City which will offer improved convenience to patients, whilst also improving efficiency for the local healthcare system. These locations will be:
• The Adelaide Health Centre –
Western Community Hospital site
• The Royal South Hants Hospital
• The Weston Lane Centre for Healthy Living
The new ENT and audiology hearing aid service will continue to be provided as a free NHS service for patients. Existing patients for this service will be contacted directly regarding their next appointment.
Dr David Paynton, a practicing GP in Southampton and Locality Commissioning Director for NHS Southampton City, said, “We know from speaking with patients, carers and clinical experts that providing care for patients within a community setting can greatly improve choice, access and levels of care for patients. InHealth has been announced as the recommended bidder as they have a great level of knowledge and experience in delivering similar successful community services elsewhere in the county.”
Dr Paynton continued “InHealth also clearly highlighted their focus on patient care and rigorous application of clinical procedures as part of their bid during the procurement process. We look forward to a successful relationship which offers an excellent level of patient care within the community.”
Paul Embley, InHealth Director of Primary Care Diagnostics commented: “The recommended bidder status at Southampton shows the confidence NHS Southampton City has in our ENT and Audiology Services and we are delighted to be able to offer an outstanding service to clinicians and their patients.”
